Description
This is a 1974 Mazda Rotary Pickup (aka REPU) with a S5 RX7 engine and 5-speed transmission. The pickup was bought 3 years ago from the family of the original owner. Original engine was found to be bad, and rather than rebuild it we decided to convert it to a later model 13B. The engine that now sits in it is out of a Series 5 RX7, and has had the front plate, oil pan, and distributor from the pickup swapped over to facilitate the install. Also done were a header swap and a Weber 45DCOE conversion, with an intake manifold that accepted the oil injectors (therefore the OMP is installed and functional). The S5 engine was sold to us as a relatively fresh rebuild, and has been running nicely in the truck since the install and Weber conversion were completed. It does run a little rough when cold but is very sweet once it gets warmed up and moving. Smaller things done were: new spark plugs/wires, new Mooneyes gauges (water temp, oil pressure, oil temp), new thermostat, engine/trans/diff oil all changed, new fuel pump/filters/regulator, new fuel and radiator hoses, new alternator with dual-drive pulley, new tires on freshly blasted and painted wheels. I imagine the carburetor could use some fine-tuning for optimal performance, but as it stands I've driven it around town and through the country with no problems. Transmission is a 5-speed out of a Series 4 RX7, and shifts very nicely. Now, on to the issues. As you can see in the pictures, the body unfortunately has some rust spots. No large rot that I can see, but a few small places where rust has eaten holes. The frame underneath appears quite solid, but there is some surface rust there. The fuel tank and sending unit were gunked up pretty bad, so I installed a temporary aluminum tank in the bed. The old tank is included in the sale in case the new owner would like to have it rebuilt or duplicated. The original engine is also included in the sale, so it can remain with the truck. Also present but not installed are the original aluminum hubcaps.
